Small Steps, Big Futures: Preparing Your Gungahlin Child for a New Era of School
Building the confidence your child needs to walk into their first day with a smile.
If you’re a parent in Gungahlin, you know our community isn’t just growing, it’s booming. We see it in the new playgrounds, the bustling shops, and the developments and Infrastructure. Recently, an article announced that Margaret Hendry School has had to double its capacity to 1,200 students just five years after opening. Meanwhile, new hubs like Throsby School and Shirley Smith High are being built with state-of-the-art facilities to keep up with our rapid growth. For a parent of a three or four-year-old, these numbers can feel overwhelming. You might wonder: “In a school environment, how will my child find their feet?” At Stepping Stones, we’ve spent 35 years helping families navigate these transitions. My advice to every nervous parent is this: School Readiness in Canberra isn’t a race to the finish line. It’s about building a solid foundation in a nurturing, small-scale environment so that when they hit those big school gates, they feel like the leaders they are.
Understanding the "April 30" Roadmap
The ACT school system has a clear structure: children must be four by 30 April to start preschool, and five by that same date to begin kindergarten.
Because ACT Public School enrolments usually open in early May for the following year, parents of three-year-olds often find that starting kindergarten in the ACT becomes a two-year conversation. This "bonus year" is a wonderful opportunity. At Stepping Stones, we use this time to move away from the "toddler" phase and toward the specialised skills your child will need for a successful transition to school in Canberra.
Making Quality Education Affordable: The 3-Year-Old Subsidy
We know that for many families, the decision to start a school readiness program in childcare early is also a financial one.
The good news? The ACT Government currently offers 300 hours of free preschool per year for eligible three-year-olds.
What it means for you: This equates to roughly 6 hours of fee relief per week (over 50 weeks).
The Best Part: This funding is applied on top of your Child Care Subsidy (CCS), significantly reducing your out-of-pocket gap fees.
Eligibility: If your child turns three on or before 30 April and is a resident of the ACT, they are likely eligible for this support at a participating partner provider, such as Stepping Stones.
The Four Pillars of Readiness: Your Child’s "Social Armour"
In a large, modern school, "soft skills" are the most important. OurSchool Readiness Programfocuses on four pillars that ensure your child isn't just "attending" school, but thriving:
Emotional Regulation
We teach children how to "reset" after a disagreement, a vital skill for busy playgrounds at schools.Independence & Self-Care
Mastering the "Lunchbox Test", opening containers and managing their own gear builds massive self-esteem.Social Bravery
We move beyond "parallel play" to collaborative problem-solving, preparing them for the social landscape of Gungahlin’s primary schools.Self-Agency
Teaching children how to ask for help is a superpower in a school environment.
Fiona’s 35 Year Industry Wisdom: Continuity is Key
After three decades in early childhood, I can tell you that children flourish when they feel safe. By choosing a high-quality preschool environment in Gungahlin early, you are giving your child the gift of continuity.
Our inquiry-based program at Yerrabi Ponds mimics the "big school" routine within the warmth of a family-owned centre. We want to be the "calm before the big adventure."
Our days are about messy, hands-on discovery. We might spend a morning watching the ducks at the pond to talk about nature, or huddled together in the classroom trying to figure out why a block tower keeps falling over. We aren't just checking off a list; we are protecting that spark of curiosity that makes a child want to learn.
A Partner in the Journey
The end goal: A child who feels capable, independent, and excited for their new adventure.
If you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed by talk of enrolments and school zones, take a deep breath. You have time and a community here to support you. Whether your child is a "young" three-year-old or approaching their final year before Kindergarten, our goal is the same: to ensure they walk into their new school feeling brave, capable, and excited.
